Office Phone: 215-944-1151 In The Once and Future King, Merlyn wisely comments, "Education is experience, and the essence of experience is self-reliance" (White 35). This year, we'll focus on developing your education through experiences in close-reading, analytical writing, and critical thinking in order to make you more self-reliant intellectuals.
You have chosen to take a difficult class, but I expect you to reach for excellence, not perfection. Every test and quiz may not go our way, and we might perceive these as "failures," and so might our friends. However, none of us can perfectly achieve our goals every day, and our failures often provide valuable learning lessons that develop us into well-rounded, empathetic people. Remember that you will not be the perfect student, nor will I be the perfect teacher. However, I can promise you that I will reach for excellence in providing you academic opportunities to grow and to learn.
Will you do the same? Do you have the courage to run the gauntlet of life, to reach for excellence even when disappointments cloud your day? If you do, then no matter what the day-to-day challenges are, we will meet them together. I believe in collaboration and the power of people working together, and only together does the insurmountable become possible.
Yes, I care about your academic progress, but more importantly, I care about the kind of young men and women that you are becoming, for you, as the next generation, will shape the future of the world in which we live.
Let's do so together.
Affectionately,
