COURSES IN THIS DEPARTMENT SATISFY THE ARTS AND HUMANITIES OR FREE ELECTIVE REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION. The Family and Consumer Science Program, formerly known as Home Economics, is designed to help individuals assume responsibilities for living and working in a global society. Family and Consumer Science emphasizes coping skills and critical thinking needed to deal with challenges affecting one's environment. Family and Consumer Science recognizes the importance of the individual and stresses the family and community working together. WORLD OF FASHION (AD) GRADES 9 -12 This career-oriented course is designed for the student interested in the fashion field or retail merchandising. The course includes buying and marketing concepts, studies of fashion designers, textiles, and evaluationof clothing. The basic principles of fashion design and professional merchandising techniques are also stressed. WORLD OF FASHION 2 (AD) GRADES 10-12 A continuation of World of Fashion 1, this course aims at diving into both the Fashion and Marketing Industry. Students are given creative freedom to advance their sewing skills as they assist in costume design, service-learning projects, and a culminating fashion show. Students are expected to create a fashion portfolio during the year. Topics covered in this course include: fashion history, construction, sustainability, and marketing concepts. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to explore the many career areas they could pursue in the fashion industry as well as enhance their fashion construction skills. A $20.00 lab fee is collected for this course. Students are responsible for purchasing fabric, notions, and patterns for individual sewing projects INTERIOR DESIGN (AD) GRADES 9-12 Interior design is a course designed to introduce students to the professional technical and aesthetic aspects of the interior environment. Students study a broad range of economic, technological, environmental and maintenance factors associated with the design process. Topics include housing and furniture styles, architecture, floor planning skills, elements and design and influences related to interior styles. A wide range of activities are offered in order to meet the needs of students with varying levels of ability. Individual and team projects, research and laboratory work including mock-ups, floor plans, and color charts enhance the students' in class learning experiences. LIFE ON YOUR OWN (AD) GRADES 9-12 This comprehensive course builds knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors students will need as they prepare to take the next steps toward adulthood in today's ever-changing society. Students will learn the basics for managing the many aspects of adult life, including the college experience. Topics include setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, banking & financial management, consumerism, interpersonal relationships, food preparation and decision making. In addition, the course provides practical information on how to find a job, interviewing skills, management housing resources and how to maintain health through lifestyle management, exercise and good nutrition. A $10.00 lab fee is required. CHILD DEVELOPMENT: PARENTING (AD) GRADES 9 - 12 This course is designed to help students think about parenting as one of the choices they will have to make during their lifetimes, and to consider how they will make those choices responsibly. The course deals with the responsibilities of parenthood including infant care, finances and family relationships. All students participate in a learning activity using infant simulators. Group discussions and individual student input will be emphasized. Early Childhood Education and Careers (Pre-school LAB) 9-12 This career oriented course is for those interested in working with children. Emphasis is placed on the study of children from 3-5 years of age including their physical, mental, emotional, and social development. A child case study will be required of all students. Basic teaching techniques for working withyoung children are covered and participation in our laboratory nursery school is required. INTRODUCTION FOOD PREP (S) (AD) GRADES 9-12 This course covers basic and modern food preparation, emphasizing ease of preparation, convenience, nutrition,and budgeting time and money. Teamwork and cooperative learning are emphasied. Each students's cooking skills will be developed so that he/she may prepare healthful, nutritious foods and meals for themselves or others. This is a learn-by-doing course, consisting of food laboratories, demonstrations, research and projects. To cover the cost of supplies and equipment, a $20.00 lab fee is required. CULINARY ARTS GRADES & REGIONAL CUISINE 10 -12 This course covers more advanced food preparation techniques and complete meal service. All food groups will be studied in detail, emphasizing food safety and sanitation, nutrition, cost analysis, food presentation, hospitality and service styles. Opportunities may be provided in pastry and baking applications. This course will provide students with a multi-cultural experience as they study the foods, dietary needs, family traditions and celebration of people around the world. This is a learn-by-doing course consisting of food laboratories, demonstrations, research and and projects. To cover the cost of supplies and equipment, a $25.00 lab fee is required per semester. PERSONAL NUTRITION (AD) 9-12 This course is designed to encourage individuals to achieve a healthy lifestyle through improves nutrition. The goal of this course is to enable students to develope the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to avoid health risks and maintain optimum health throughout their life.Contemporary nutruition topics nutrition topics relavant to today's young adults will be explored through individual and cooperative research, guest speakers, demonstrations and special projects. Personal nutrition includes basic information on all major nutrients and the food groups. Basic scientific principles of nutrition will be applied to real life situations. Students may apply their learning through in-class food preparation and evaluation. Self-assessment and monitoring of personal nutrition status is an intergal part of this course. To cover the cost of supples and equipment a $25.00 lab fee is required per year. WORLD FOODS & CULTURES (AD) 10-12
This course is designed to give you the guided practice you need to advance your cooking and baking skills through methods found around the world. You will learn how to use different cooking techniques, what food trends affect a country, and explore various cuisines and cultural traditions. Cleanup, organization, research, and teamwork are also necessary skills that you will practice. After completing this course, my goal for you is to be confident in the kitchen, and in your ability to try new foods while traveling the world or cooking at home. a $50.00 lab fee for the year is required.
