Michal Brown-Hunte, Edan Kauer, Katelyn Gainer, and Connor Havelka, Students at Council Rock High School South, Win 2023 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing

Holland, Pennsylvania, May 2, 2023 - Michael Brown-Hunte, daughter of Meshagae Hunte and Andrew Brown of Ivyland, Pennsylvania and Edan Kauer, daughter of Suzy Lee and Michael Kauer, also of Ivyland, from Council Rock High School South have both been selected for a 2023 Achievement Award in Writing - First Class, given by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

Katelyn Gainer, daughter of Carolyn and Michael Gainer of Ivyland and Connor Havelka, whose parents are Kathy and Corey Havelka of Holland, have both been named recipients of a 2023 Achievement Award in Writing - Superior.

The contest has four designations, to recognize submissions:

The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. This is the first year participants may be either juniors or sophomores. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US territories, Canada, and American schools abroad are eligible to nominate students for the writing program.

Students Hunte-Brown, Kauer, Gainer, and Havelka are all juniors at Council Rock High School South. English Department faculty members considered writing portfolios from more than eighty students before selecting four writers to represent Council Rock High School South in the NCTE annual writing competition.

This year, schools nominated 360 students. Of that number, 114 were selected to receive the First Class designation; 131 received the Superior designation; 71 received the Excellent designation; and 31 received the Merit designation. Two to three independent judges scored each submission on expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice.

215-944-1100 Joseph Horger and Lea Wang, Students at Council Rock High School South, win 2021 NCTE Achievement Award in Writing

(Holland, Pennsylvania, May 19, 2021- Joseph Horger and Lea Wang from Council Rock High School South in the Council Rock School District have been selected for a 2021 Achievement Award in Writing, given by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. Only students who are juniors may participate. Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, American schools abroad, and the Virgin Islands are eligible to nominate students for the writing program. Both winners are students in Ms. Tina Jones’ Advanced Placement English Language and Composition class. Joseph is the son of Kathleen and Edward Horger of Churchville, and his winning writing portfolio is entitled “A Woeful Wanderer.” Lea is the daughter of Xiaowei Zhu and Qi Wang of Holland, and her winning writing portfolio is entitled “Comfort in Familiarity.”

Two students representing Council Rock South High School in the NCTE writing contest received Certificates of Nomination. Kelsey Nazaruk, also an 11th grade student in Ms. Jones’ Advanced Placement English Language class, is the daughter of Cathy and David Nazaruk of Ivyland. Junior Isabella Selekman, a student in Ms. Trish Verdi’s Advanced Placement English Language and Composition class, is the daughter of Meridith Selekman of Holland and Jeremy Selekman of Washington Crossing. This year, Pennsylvania schools nominated 284 students. Of that number, 136 received Certificates of Superior Writing and 148 received Certificates of Nomination. Each student submitted two pieces of writing. Two independent judges scored each submission on expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice. Wordstruck: Micro Essays on Literature that Redefined You

About Wordstruck: Micro Essays on Literature that Redefined You is an essay contest introduced in 2019-2020 for Pennsylvania students in Grades 10-12 that invites students to describe how a written work has influenced them personally. Students may submit independently or as part of a high school or homeschool assignment, so long as they self-select the literature they choose to write about.

One winner will be announced by Spring/Summer 2020 and awarded a $250 prize.

Submission Guidelines

The 2020 Wordstruck contest is open to Pennsylvania students in Grades 10-12 during the 2019-2020 school year. Relatives of current and former Pennsylvania Center for the Book employees are ineligible to submit. The 2020 Submission Period is: Dec 13, 2019-Mar 13, 2020.

Please note: Each participating student must complete a Wordstruck Submission Form; the system does not currently accept submissions in batches/groups.

To enter the 2020 Wordstruck essay contest:

  • Write an essay – of a minimum of 200 and maximum of 350 words – describing how a piece of literature (fiction/nonfiction/poetry/play/graphic novel) redefined your behavior, attitude, worldview, and/or personal perspective. The piece of literature must be self-selected and not assigned, e.g. by an educator/guardian.
  • Mention the Title, Author/s, and Illustrator/s (as applicable) of the selected literature in your essay.
  • Include your Full Name and Essay Title in the upper left corner of your essay document.
  • Save your essay in a Word (.doc/.docx) or PDF (.pdf) document. These are the only file types accepted by the Submissions Form.
  • Prepare the following required information before submitting; the Submission Form does not allow use of the back button for corrections in most sections:
    • Full Name

Two eleventh grade students at Council Rock High School South, Kiley Malloy and Lauren Rowlands received a Certificate of Superior Writing. Kiley is the daughter of Kevin and Kathleen Malloy of Holland, Pennsylvania. Lauren is the daughter of Jeffrey and Robyn Rowlands of Richboro, Pennsylvania. Both are students in Ms. Sharp’s Advanced Placement English and Language classes.

This year, schools nominated 416 students. Of that number, 210 received Certificates of Superior Writing. Each student submitted two pieces of writing. Two independent judges scored each submission on expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice. Please join us in congratulation these students.

Pennsylvania winners of the 2019 Letters About Literature writing contest

There were 308 letters submitted in Level 3, and our Readers and State Judges selected sophomore Isabella Coe’s letter to Sharon M. Draper about Out of My Mind as one of the top five among them. Bella is a student in Ms. Sharp’s English Honors 10 class.

  Sarah Langer, a student in Ms. Sharp's English Honors 10, is a 2019 Gold Key Award Winner in the Sholastic Writing Contest sponsored by the Philadephia Writing Project.  Sarah won for her poem "Sunrise".   Nicole Salapong from Council Rock High School South has been selected for a 2018 Achievement Award in Writing, given by the national Council fo Teachers of English (NCTE). The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation.  Only students who are juniors may participate.  Schools in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, American schools abroad, and the Virgin Islands are eligible to nominate students for the writing program.   An eleventh grade student at Council Rock High School South, NICOLE SALAPONG received a Certificate of Superior Writing.  She is the daughter of Roderick and Christine Salapong of Holland, Pennsylvania.  Nicole is the President of the Council Rock South French Honors Society, and she will serve next year as the Submissions Manager for Illuminations, the Council Rock South literary publication.  Please join us in congratulating Nicole for receiving this prestigious award.   This year, schools nominated 462 students.  Of that number, 227 recieved Certificates of Superior Writing and 235 received Certificates of Nomination.  Each student submitted two pieces of writing.  Two independent judges scored each submission on expression of ideas, language use, and unique perspective and voice.

  The Library of Congress - Letters about Literature 2017-2018 In the Library of Congress' 25th Annual LETTERS ABOUT LITERATURE WRITING COMPETITION, 335 students from Pennsylvania in grades 9-12 entered this year's contest.  Two 11th grade students from Council Rock High School South placed in the top 5:

was recognized for his letter to author WuChengen for Journey to the West, and Jing Lin was recognized for her letter to author Daniel James Brown for the The Boys in the Boat.
